This piece was a bit a departure from painting on perfectly formed panels and canvases. I wanted to work on paper and then adhere it to a support because the qualities of paper are very different from water-resistant surfaces. I also wanted to work in a more abstract manner using limited shapes to visualize a short story of my inspiration. The glowing orange red of a sunrise inspired the overall color scheme with ripples of light on the water. The vertical is a representation of a sailboat mast or pier piling that links areas of this work together. The foreground curve is similar to a shoreline or gunwales of a boat. The spareness of this piece brings together many elements I frequently work with in my paintings. I have experimented with a less exact border allowing an inexact baseline and whitish border that echoes my mantra of "messy, uncommon, friendly contemporary art".
