This piece began with green tones as the underpainting, applied with various tools and scrapers to create a foundation of under colors that would be the basis for layering yet more color. I enjoy working with this under layer of quickly applied paint using various tools to create textures and unusual marks. I then figure an overall design which I pull from my sketchbook, to begin to figure a direction this painting may go in. It frequently doesn't listen to me but I do eventually figure out how my sensibilities will bring the various aspects together to form an interesting result. This took a big turn when I realized I wanted to unify all the colors/tones and mark-making of the main figure. And overall wash of cools blues did just that allowing me to settle into what this painting needed. The repeat thin line pattern at lower right was added last suggesting interwoven waves and movement, in the figures' mind or in reality.
