This heavily textured painting has bits of collaged sail fabric and paper. The strong vertical shape is my nod to totem poles, a favorite form of sculpture I have admired of the Northwest Canadian indian culture. I have taken a vertical slice of a very long horizontal scene and captured a sense of distance along with activity on the water. The primary rough texture is made by applying acrylic fiber paste directly on the gessoed canvas as a first layer. Then sanding lightly and painting over to retain the coarse surface.
