I've always been fascinated by backlighting as it creates incredibly strong contrast of light and dark. I've tried to bring that impression to this painting design. The payoff at the lower area is the fisherman's orange foul weather gear and the traps as the light peeks through. In October 20221 I took another look at this painting in its earlier iteration. Feedback from a gallery was that it was 'very dark'. Meaning it didn't appeal to people viewing it. So as I have been known to do, I take another look at it and revise or renovate the image to be stronger--adding what I have learned since painting this piece. I now like this lightened version much better and have worked on the detail in the foreground which was also dark in the earlier version.
