I explored late afternoon backlightng in this painting--liking the way the warm whites of the sails turned into lavenders and tans. In an expressive manner I contrasted these whites with rich blues of the seascape and highlighted the figures on the schooner by placing the sunburst of light directly behind them. The surprise of this piece is the American flag off the stern also back lit and painted with the only touch of red in the painting.
