Harbor Fish Market wharf, Portland, Maine. The dilapidated look of this historic fishing pier in both sunlight and shadow, offers a myriad of design and color options. At least the way I see this grungy, smelly, wonderful space. I've simplified color, shape and form into the essence of what I wanted to paint about--the edges of light and shadow and what makes them clear and unclear at the same time. Overexposed and underexposed lighting makes this view so dramatic. Simplifying the complex forms and colors, while highlighting aspects that I enjoy working with, are what this painting is about. Yes I'm leaving out so much of the detail of reflections, shadow forms, specular highlights, peeling paint, floating seagull feathers, grime and refuse--all to highlight the strong shadow under the wharf, highlight the fisherman on the deck half in and out of sunlight, and the reflected light on seagull wings and boat bows. So much to play with every time I visit this place. Hope you enjoy this light-hearted view.
